What is a Serving?

Measuring Tools With You at All Times

You know who you are! A serving equals the size of the bag or the size of your plate. It's a slippery slope.

"The Joy of Cooking" edition from 1963 shows serving sizes that are much smaller than in 2006.

Health experts feel that larger portions is the top reason for larger waistlines in the US. Look at the label and see what a portion means to calculate the nutritional information.

Do you carry measuring cups and spoons with you when dining at your favorite local spot? Probably not.

Your grandmother may have measured ingredients using her palm; so can you. Now don't pick up your pasta- your friends may think you have lost it.

But, look at your fist, then look at the plate set in front of you. A serving size of pasta is about the size of your fist.

Animal protein (Fish, chicken, beef) = palm

Starchy carbs (pasta, potatoes, rice) = fist

Fat (peanut butter, butter, olive oil = half a thumb

Fruit = palm

Vegetables = 2 palms

Other visual tips may not always be with you at the table.

Bring your hand with you!
